| Summary, etc. | Préoccupés par la conservation de leur collection de peintures, les amateurs d'art parisiens font appel, entre 1789 et 1870, aux restaurateurs de tableaux, une profession qui, à la même époque, se définit indépendamment de celles du marchand, de l’expert ou même du peintre. Si le restaurateur intervient sur les œuvres, il joue aussi un rôle de guide auprès de ces amateurs dans leur connaissance, voire leur apprentissage, des procédés picturaux. Progressivement, cette prise en compte de la matérialité de l’œuvre contribue à l’intégration de l’amateur de tableaux au sein des commissions muséales en tant que conseiller, avant qu’il acquière un statut privilégié au musée à partir des années 1860 par le legs de ses œuvres. En abordant ainsi différents aspects de la collection privée au prisme des méthodes de restauration et des moyens de conservation des tableaux mis en œuvre au xixe siècle, s’écrit ici une histoire des collections, de la restauration et de la conservation, mais aussi une histoire des pratiques, et avant tout une histoire de mouvement et de goût. |
