| Summary, etc. | La topique interprétative des Métamorphoses d’Apulée trouve ses fondements dans la spécificité des problèmes que l’œuvre pose au regard du critique : celui du contraste, réel ou apparent, qu’elle présente avec la personnalité de son auteur ; celui du genre auquel elle prétend appartenir ; celui de la source dont elle émane ; celui du travail de composition auquel Apulée s’est livré en imitant une œuvre grecque ; et celui, qui les englobe tous, de l’intention qu’il a poursuivie en se livrant à un tel exercice apparemment futile. C’est la raison pour laquelle nous avons choisi de présenter cette histoire de l’interprétation des Métamorphoses selon trois axes majeurs : celui du sens de l’œuvre qui se structure autour des deux paradigmes du ludique et/ou du sérieux ; celui de l’origine de ce récit de l’âne et du genre dont elle prétend relever, la milésienne latine ; et celui de l’art narratif apuléien et du mode de composition, unitaire ou épisodique, de ce récit en plusieurs livres. The interpretive topics of Apuleius' Metamorphoses are based on the specific problems that the work poses for the critic: that of the contrast, real or apparent, that it presents with the personality of its author; that of the genre to which it claims to belong; that of the source from which it emanates; that of the work of composition that Apuleius engaged in by imitating a Greek work; and that, which encompasses them all, of the intention that he pursued by indulging in such an apparently futile exercise. This is why I have chosen to present this history of the interpretation of the Metamorphoses along three major lines: that of the meaning of the work, which is structured around the two paradigms of playfulness and/or seriousness; that of the origin of this story of the donkey and the genre it claims to belong to, the Latin Milesian; and that of Apuleius' narrative art and the mode of composition, unitary or episodic, of this tale in several books. |
