Tout d’abord, la vie des êtres humains a été délimitée et précisée par les limites juridictionnelles locales (communautés d’habitants, seigneuries et paroisses) et par les aires d’influence des communautés urbaines. Treize cas, concentrés en France et s’étendant jusqu’au Bas-Rhin et la côte atlantique portugaise en passant par la Catalogne, sont ici analysés par de prestigieux historiens, afin de saisir les axes qui permettent de reconnaître et de délimiter l’espace local depuis la fin de l’Empire romain jusqu’à la fin du Moyen Âge. Il s’agit d’une période de formation pour l’identité européenne, où le profil territorial joua un rôle essentiel qu’il faut connaître afin de saisir de façon appropriée les racines du présent. The limits and borders are not an erudite or formal story. Humans are always affected and delimited by the local jurisdictional boundaries (popular communities, lordships and parishes) and the air of influence linked to urban communities. |
