| Summary, etc. | Marguerite de France hérite en 1361 des comtés d’Artois et de Bourgogne. Veuve, elle exerce désormais seule son autorité sur ces terres unies par le mariage de Mahaut d’Artois et Othon IV de Bourgogne. En un temps marqué par de profondes mutations dans le gouvernement des principautés, Marguerite va tenir des pays secoués par la guerre et les transmettre à son fils Louis de Male, puis à sa petite-fille Marguerite de Male et à son époux Philippe le Hardi. L’étude de son action éclaire les modalités d’exercice d’un pouvoir au féminin dans le cadre d’une union personnelle associant des terres éloignées, en un temps de bureaucratisation des principautés. Pour ce faire, l’analyse du processus de décision permet de saisir comment s’articulent gouvernement central et organes provinciaux, qu’il s’agisse du conseil, de la chancellerie ou des finances. Quant à ses réseaux, qui incluent parents, alliés et officiers, ils font émerger un milieu stable mêlant flamands, français, artésiens et bourguignons et reposant sur la combinaison de talents intellectuels, techniques et militaires. In 1361, Marguerite of France inherited the counties of Artois and Burgundy. As a widow, she could exercise her authority by herself over these lands, which had been united by the marriage of Mahaut of Artois and Othon IV of Burgundy. In an age of structural changes in the way principalities were governed, Marguerite firmly ruled her lands, even as they were affected by war. She was able to transmit her legacy: first to her son Louis of Male, then to her grand-daughter Marguerite of Male and to her husband Philippe the Bold. The study of her political actions sheds light on the ways in which a feminine power could exist at a time when principalities were becoming increasingly bureaucratic, especially within the framework of a composite union of territories under one personal authority.
