| Summary, etc. | La traduction de vingt chants choisis de la Divine Comédie parut en plein courant romantique en 1829, dans la même année que les Orientales de Victor Hugo, au lendemain des Études françaises et étrangères d’Émile Deschamps. Antoni avait voulu contribuer, pour sa part, à donner ses lettres de naturalisation au grand poète que la nouvelle école plaçait non sans raison parmi ses ancêtres. Il entreprenait d’initier à cette poésie admirable le lecteur français qui l’avait jusqu’alors méconnu. Aussi ne voulut-il que donner, selon ses propres expressions, «une idée du ton et de la manière de Dante». Il s’abstint de notes et de commentaires […]; il s’attacha uniquement à reproduire, avec une religieuse fidélité, la couleur et surtout l’accent de la poésie dantesque.
