| Summary, etc. | À partir d’une centaine de textes personnels et intimes, cet ouvrage propose une étude renouvelée du conflit franco-allemand de 1870-1871, au plus près des témoins civils qui l’ont subi. Ce riche corpus archivistique, en partie inédit (lettres, journaux personnels ou intimes, souvenirs), permet de construire une histoire de la guerre de 1870 à l’échelle des individus et d’offrir ainsi une vision unique d’un conflit qui remet profondément en question l’identité nationale française. Faisant jouer les variables géographique, sociale et de genre, ce travail interroge le rôle des écritures de soi dans la capacité à analyser ses propres émotions, à supporter l’absence des proches et les inquiétudes liées à leur sort, mais aussi à rendre compte de la douleur de l’incertitude dans la défaite et des transformations opérées dans l’univers quotidien, du foyer à la nation. L’enquête historique menée ici dépasse le strict temps de la guerre et des occupations allemandes (1870-1873) et s’étend jusqu’en 1914, afin de mieux saisir le caractère traumatique et post-traumatique de ces expériences sur un temps long, et comprendre en quoi ces textes sont aussi révélateurs d’une crise morale et identitaire française née de la défaite de 1871. Based on around a hundred personal and intimate texts, this book offers a fresh look at the Franco-German conflict of 1870-1871, from the perspective of the civilian witnesses who lived through it. This rich corpus of material, some of which has never been published before (letters, personal or intimate diaries, memoirs), makes it possible to construct a history of the 1870 war on an individual level, offering a unique vision of a conflict that profoundly challenged French national identity.
