| Summary, etc. | Comment l’Irak moderne est-il né ? Ce travail propose une brève histoire de la formation du territoire de l’Etat-nation irakien. A l’instar de nombreux pays issus de la colonisation, l’Irak connaît des problèmes territoriaux. Mais cet Etat se distingue peut-être par une difficulté particulière à s’ajuster à la forme et à la taille de son assiette territoriale. En nous plongeant dans les circonstances de sa morphogenèse depuis le XVIe siècle, nous comprendrons mieux non seulement ses malaises et différends territoriaux récurrents, mais aussi certains dilemmes structurels de cet Etat, dont les implications se font toujours sentir dans sa politique étrangère et interne. La présente étude tâche de dépasser le paradigme de « l’artificialité » et de la multiethnicité de l’Irak comme causes de tous ses maux. Elle plaide pour davantage de profondeur historique et d’empirisme, et pour moins d’essentialisme ethnocentré dans l’approche des problèmes de l’Irak moderne.
