| Summary, etc. | Cet ouvrage étudie le destin de quelque cent vingt officiera de finance de la première moitié du XVIe siècle. Il analyse leur rôle dans l’appareil monarchique, en s'interrogeant sur leurs méthodes de travail et sur l'ampleur de leur engagement au service du roi. Fortement impliqués dans les circuits de l'argent, ces hommes sont souvent dénoncés pour leurs malversations : ces accusations sont-elles fondées ? La réussite sociale des officiers de finance transparaît d’abord dans l'étude de leurs fortunes, avec pour objectif de comprendre le processus de leur enrichissement, puis dans celle de leurs réseaux, dont il faut mesurer l'efficacité. Par rapport aux puissants du royaume, ils occupent une position originale, étant à la fois leurs clients et leurs créanciers. Dans leur désir de se fondre au sein des élites sociales, les gens de finance tentent de concilier volonté de mimétisme et singularité de leur position. Cette singularité découle de la place suspecte de l'argent dans leur parcours et de la rapidité de leur ascension. L'étude minutieuse de ce groupe restreint est donc mise par Philippe Hamon au service d une large réflexion sur le fonctionnement de la société et de la monarchie dans la France de la Renaissance. This book examines the lives and careers of some one hundred and twenty officiers de finance from the first half of the sixteenth century. It analyses their role within the monarchical structure, and examines their working methods and the scope of their commitments in service of the King. As they were heavily involved in financial dealings, these men were often accused of embezzlement – was there a basis for such accusations? The social success of these officiers de finance is revealed in the examination of their fortunes, with an eye to understanding how they became rich, and of their networks, the efficiency of which is analysed. Their position in relation to France's most powerful individuals was unique, as they were both clients and creditors.… |
