The dossier presents methodological reflections on literary representations of divine action. Divine action imposes choices, strategies, words and gestures, which epigraphic and literary sources record or conceal, describe or explain. For ancient authors only provide us with traces of the interwoven action of men and gods, echoes and fragments, according to their own logic, which must be taken into account: Ovid or Pausanias, Julian or Virgil do not take the same interest in ritual agentivity; the filters they superimpose on reality call for a distancing that the contributors to this dossier have endeavoured to achieve.
