La formation des clercs est une des préoccupations centrales des Églises chrétiennes à la fin du Moyen Âge et à l’époque moderne. Toutefois, elle a souvent donné lieu à des études considérant de manière découplée les enjeux liés à la vocation, la professionnalisation et la construction identitaire des membres du clergé.Les travaux ici rassemblés proposent à l’inverse de montrer comment s’articulent ces facettes, en examinant les orientations prises, les moyens investis et les dispositifs choisis pour présider à la fabrique du clerc. Tous les temps de la formation (initiale et continue) sont envisagés, du côté des formateurs comme des postulants, permettant d’observer les mobilités sociales et spatiales, l’imposition de normes ou encore l’émergence d’identités de corps souvent concurrentes (catholique, protestante, orthodoxe) mais qui s’observent et s’influencent mutuellement. Ainsi, les interrogations portées par l’ouvrage contribueront à stimuler les comparaisons entre clergés chrétiens européens. The training of clerics was one of the central concerns of the Christian churches in the late Middle Ages and in early modern times. However, historians have mostly considered the issues of vocation, professionalization and the construction of clergymen's identities in isolation from each other.The studies gathered here aim to show how these aspects are inextricably linked, by examining the directions taken, the resources invested and the mechanisms chosen to preside over the 'making of the clergyman'. All stages of training (initial and continued) are considered, from the point of view of both educators and candidates, allowing us to scrutinize social and spatial mobilities, the imposition of norms, and the emergence of confessional identities (Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox) which, on the one hand, influenced and, on the other hand, competed with each other.
