À l’époque contemporaine, elle devint une partie, délaissée et périphérique, de Clermont-Ferrand, avant que l’arrivée de prisonniers, réfugiés et travailleurs étrangers, puis l’industrialisation ne transforment radicalement l’espace clermontois et fassent, du bourg viticole qu’était devenu Montferrand, une ville ouvrière. De ce passé subsistent un urbanisme, des monuments, de riches archives municipales, des symboles, un sentiment d’appartenance. Ce sont les diverses facettes de cette histoire, d’une « ville neuve » – comparable à bien d’autres, du xiie au xvie siècle, en Europe et en Amérique – à l’identité d’un quartier, qu’explore cet ouvrage, fruit d’une collaboration universitaire pluridisciplinaire et internationale. From its birth around 1120 to its union with neighbouring Clermont in 1630, and its eventual absorption into the latter a century later, Montferrand was one of the principal towns in Auvergne, proud of its political autonomy, its commercial dynamism and the role it felt it played in the organisation of the Kingdom of France. In modern times, it became a neglected, peripheral part of Clermont-Ferrand, before the arrival of prisoners, refugees and foreign workers, followed by industrialisation, radically transformed the Clermont-Ferrand area and turned Montferrand from a wine-growing village into a working-class town. This past has left its mark on town planning, monuments, rich municipal archives, symbols and a sense of belonging.
